Nathaniel Greene Williams, son of George and Virginia Williams, was born in Nashville, TN. He attended elementary school at an early age with his mother who was a teacher. He graduated from Pearl High School and from Fisk University with a Degree in Music. He also attended Tennessee A& I University, University of Texas and the University of Iowa. It was at Fisk University that he met his beloved friends, Marcet and Dr. John Q. Taylor King who influenced his coming to Tillotson College. He was hired in 1949 to work at Tillotson College. He expanded the Music Department to include a choir, marching band, swing band and a symphony orchestra. Another big innovation at the college was high school “Band Day” which continued as a yearly event for many years.
He served as Director of Music at the Wesley Methodist Church in Austin for 35 years and also participated as an officer in the Austin Aqua Festival. He worked as Director of Music at the Gary Job Corp and KTBC where he appeared weekly on the “Uncle Jay Show.” He continued to play the piano and to entertain the residents of several convalescent centers as well as playing in several jazz bands until April 1997. Nathaniel passed away on May 2, 1997 at the age of 75. He influenced the lives and careers of many young musicians that graduated from Huston-Tillotson College that is now Huston-Tillotson University.
